Chapter_150
At the dining table, Zachary and Howard were engaged in an animated conversation, enjoying the meal. Lucas and Liam occasionally joined in, adding their own comments, but Yvette remained a quiet observer. She was comfortably nestled in her chair, her legs crossed as she ate, her half-closed eyes suggesting she was lost in her own thoughts.
Liam couldn’t help but sneak glances at her from time to time. How did she manage to convince someone like Howard to lend the Chambers family five billion dollars and hand over his core team? he wondered, baffled. The idea didn’t make sense. FastPulse Technologies was a big deal, and their collaboration was something that Howard would likely want to handle himself.
Zachary, too, was struggling to understand the situation. How did we go from the brink of collapse to receiving a lifeline this big? he thought, feeling the confusion bubble up inside him.
After a long pause, he finally spoke. “Mr. Yates, does the chairman of your company know about this? If he does, won’t it be hard for you to explain everything?”
Howard paused, setting his fork and knife down. His eyes flickered briefly to Yvette, who was quietly eating across the table. A subtle, knowing smile tugged at his lips. “There’s no need to worry, Mr. Chambers,” he said, his voice calm. “The chairman is fully aware of everything and supports my decision. You can relax and look forward to signing the contract tomorrow.”
Zachary offered a stiff smile, though it was clear he still didn’t quite believe it. This is how the super-wealthy operate, huh? he thought, bewildered.
Turning to Yvette, who was seated across from him, he asked, “Yvette, how did you know Mr. Yates?”
Yvette glanced at him briefly, her expression unreadable. She slowly raised her eyes, her voice casual and indifferent as she replied, “We met by chance.”
Zachary, sensing her reluctance to discuss it further, didn’t press the matter.
As they continued eating, Zachary noticed Yvette staring at the fish on her plate, hesitating. Before he could mention how good it was, Howard spoke up.
“Hang on,” he said, catching everyone’s attention.
Lucas and Liam exchanged confused glances as Howard carefully picked up a piece of the fish, deftly removing all the bones before placing it back onto Yvette’s plate.
The sight stunned everyone at the table.
Liam pinched himself discreetly. Is this real? he thought. It’s unbelievable.
Zachary’s eyes darkened, a mixture of confusion and a touch of something else in his gaze. Is this some kind of… gesture? he thought, but remained silent, not sure what to make of it.
After finishing the meal, they left the restaurant. As they stepped outside, they spotted Jeremiah standing nearby, dressed in a black shirt with the top buttons undone and his sleeves rolled up, revealing his pale wrists. He stood casually, one hand in his pocket, the soft glow of the streetlights highlighting his figure.
The moment Yvette spotted him, she halted and smiled slightly. Her eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief, and she turned to Howard and the others.
“See you,” she said, her voice light, before walking leisurely toward Jeremiah.
As they met, Jeremiah took Yvette’s hand without hesitation. She seemed slightly surprised, but didn’t protest. Together, they walked away, their backs a perfect match, moving in sync as though they were two halves of a whole.
The others were left behind, staring at each other, processing what had just happened. Zachary and Lucas knew exactly who Jeremiah was—his Major General badge had been enough to intimidate anyone back in the day.
Howard, on the other hand, didn’t know the full story. He watched them leave, his mind working. Jeremiah doesn’t seem like just some random person. He must be important.
Inside the car, Jeremiah glanced at Yvette, who was looking down at her phone, her collarbones faintly visible in the dim light as she absentmindedly fiddled with it. He couldn’t take his eyes off her.
She noticed and raised her head, her eyes briefly meeting his. “Why are you staring at me like that?” she asked, her voice low.
Jeremiah’s lips curved into a lazy smile. “Because you’re beautiful.”
Yvette’s hand, which had been holding the phone, froze for a moment. She looked up at him with a slight raise of her eyebrow. “I know,” she replied coolly.
Jeremiah chuckled, clearly amused by her nonchalance. “Do you need any help with the Chambers family’s crisis?” he asked, his tone a bit more serious.
Yvette didn’t even look up as she tucked her phone away and leaned back comfortably in her seat, resting her chin in one hand. “No need. It’s almost over,” she said casually, her tone dismissive but confident.
Jeremiah nodded, but his expression shifted. He suddenly looked more solemn, his eyes distant. “I’m going to Mysonna for a mission tomorrow. It’ll probably take about two weeks,” he said, his voice softer.
Yvette’s eyebrow arched slightly, but she didn’t seem particularly concerned. “Oh, got it,” she replied, her voice cool, her eyes reflecting a quiet pride.
As they neared the girl’s dormitory, Jeremiah’s mood seemed to darken even further. Watching Yvette turn away without hesitation, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. With a deep sigh, he pulled her back into his arms, his chin resting against the top of her head.
“Don’t you have anything to say to me?” he asked, his voice low, almost regretful.
Yvette shook her head, her eyes glittering as she looked up at him. She simply said, “Safe travels.”
Jeremiah couldn’t help but smile helplessly, knowing this was just how Yvette was. She was always different—aloof, yet somehow still pulling him in. “Alright. Go back now,” he murmured, reluctantly letting her go.
He watched as she walked into the building, his gaze lingering on her until she disappeared inside. With one last glance, he turned and left, his mind heavy with thoughts of her.
The next day, Zachary and Howard’s lawyers worked tirelessly overnight to draft the contract. By around 10:30 AM, it was finalized and signed.
Zachary sat in his office, staring at the contract in his hands in a daze, still processing everything that had happened. Lucas, who had barely slept the night before, stood nearby, his nerves on edge.
“Mr. Chambers, the company is saved. Ms. Chambers is incredible,” Lucas said, his voice filled with awe. “She even knows someone like Howard, and now she’s secured that much-needed investment. I’ve also prepared the office you requested. We’ll be expecting the core tech team from InnoCrest Technologies soon.”
Zachary’s expression softened, a sense of relief washing over him. With InnoCrest Technologies backing them, the Smith and Carter families would think twice before making their next move.
Zachary looked up from the contract and gave a small nod. “Inform all the reporters in Seacrity that the Chambers Group will be holding a press conference this afternoon. Keep it quiet for now. I want to catch the Smith family completely off guard, especially Dennis. He’ll probably think we’re announcing bankruptcy,” he said, a determined edge to his voice.
Lucas nodded, his face reflecting the same determination. “Got it. I’ll notify the media about the 3 PM press conference.”
Meanwhile, Howard sat in a hotel room, pacing back and forth. He glanced at the clock repeatedly, checking the time as the minutes ticked by. He finally sat down on the sofa, trying to calm his nerves.
Just after noon, there was a knock at the door. Howard stood up quickly, opening it to find Yvette standing in the doorway, her face partially obscured by a black baseball cap, mask, and dark sunglasses. She wore a black tracksuit, her movements casual yet deliberate.
As the door opened, she walked past him, heading straight for the couch. Without a word, she removed her hat and mask, revealing her stunning face.
Howard, his demeanor completely shifting, bowed respectfully. “Boss.”
