Chapter_64
The tension in the room thickened as Whitney hastily adjusted herself, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks, the confusion swirling in her mind, and the growing unease from Elaine’s interruption.
Elaine stood in the doorway, her smile plastered on her face, but her eyes held a knowing glint, as if she had already figured out more than she should have. Whitney could feel her presence like a weight pressing down on her, a reminder that the game had changed.
“Elaine, what do you want?” Whitney spat, her voice still tinged with the heat of the moment. Her body was still trembling from the exchange, unsure of whether to fight the growing storm or let it pass. She wanted to escape, but the words, the tension, and the eyes of the two people in the room kept her rooted in place.
Elaine didn’t flinch. “I was wondering when you two would finally get to the point,” she remarked, her tone light and casual, though her eyes were sharp. “But I guess I’ll let you have your moment… for now.”
Ludwik’s eyes shifted, a quiet intensity emanating from him as he looked at Whitney. “We’re not done here yet,” he murmured, though the playful grin had faded from his lips. There was an almost unreadable expression in his gaze now, an unreadable force that made the air even more suffocating.
Whitney’s chest tightened. Every instinct told her to push him away, to resist whatever game he was playing with her, but deep down, a part of her wanted to give in, to hear him finish what he had started. Was it just the heat of the moment? Or was there something deeper at play here?
Elaine, sensing the shift, smirked and tossed a glance toward the man in the room. “Well, if you’re finished with the theatrics, maybe you should let us get back to what we came here for,” she said, eyeing Ludwik.
His gaze flickered briefly toward her, but he didn’t respond immediately, his attention still mostly on Whitney, as if waiting for her to speak, to react.
Whitney wanted to argue, to stand her ground, but instead, she found herself speechless. The emotion she had fought so hard to control now swirled uncontrollably within her, leaving her with nothing but the undeniable realization that this man had more control over her heart than she was willing to admit.
She turned to Elaine, her voice still shaking but filled with a cold resolve. “Just go,” she spat, though the words felt hollow even to herself. “You and Ludwik can do whatever you want. But know this—I’m not going to be a pawn in your game.”
Elaine raised an eyebrow, intrigued by Whitney’s sudden shift. “Is that so? I guess we’ll see about that, won’t we?” she teased, clearly enjoying the drama unfolding before her.
As Elaine’s words hung in the air, Whitney’s heart pounded louder, the clarity of the situation finally hitting her. She couldn’t keep running from the truth. She couldn’t ignore her feelings anymore, no matter how much it hurt to acknowledge them.
Ludwik stepped forward, closing the distance between them. “You don’t have to play this game, Whitney,” he said quietly, the earlier intensity now replaced with something softer, almost too tender to be real. “You already know what I want from you. But it’s up to you to decide if you’re ready to admit it.”
His words hung in the air like a challenge, pulling her deeper into the tangled web of emotions and desires she had tried so hard to avoid.
