Chapter_57
Whitney’s mind raced as she processed the new information, trying to piece together the puzzle of L and Ludwik’s strange connection. Her suspicions were growing, and the more she thought about it, the more she felt a sense of urgency to confirm what she feared. If L was really Ludwik, then everything about their relationship had been a lie.
But how could she prove it?
The discovery of the cigarette brand had been a major breakthrough, and with Tiana’s support, she was determined to dig deeper. As she and Tiana had planned, they set out to find more concrete evidence. The visit to the tobacco bureau had confirmed that the cigarette was an exclusive, luxury item that only a handful of people in the world could afford. The thought that two of them might be in Banyan City was staggering. How could she not have noticed the similarities between Ludwik and L?
“Fewer than ten men in the world can boast owning these?” Tiana raised an eyebrow. “Seems like a stretch to me, but I suppose it’s possible. But L? Does he really have that kind of pull?”
Whitney looked at her friend, her mind still turning the pieces over. “That’s what I’m trying to figure out. L might seem like a regular guy, but there’s something bigger here. And if L is Ludwik, then all those little details make sense.”
They walked back to the building L had claimed as his office, hoping to confirm their suspicions. When they reached the 28th floor, their worst fears were confirmed. The office was gone, as though it had never existed. There was no sign of L’s business, only an empty space where his office once stood.
Tiana couldn’t help but tease, “I told you, girl. He probably rented some makeshift space to play a little game with his darling wife. He’s definitely keeping his cards close to his chest.”
Whitney bit her lip, frustration bubbling beneath her calm facade. “This is no game. If L’s office is gone, then his real company has to be something huge—something like Imperial Gem Corporation. A global giant. That would explain the exclusive cigarettes, the luxury, the power.”
Tiana smirked as she leaned against the wall, “You’re really diving headfirst into this conspiracy theory, huh? I mean, if L is Ludwik, then your whole marriage is one big charade.”
Whitney’s pulse quickened at the thought. If she was right, everything she’d believed about Ludwik and L had been a lie. He had been playing her, just like he’d played the rest of the world.
As they made their way back from the building, Whitney’s mind couldn’t quiet. The pieces were falling into place, but there was one thing she hadn’t figured out yet—what was Ludwik’s endgame? Why would he go through all this trouble?
At lunch, Whitney remained out of the house. She’d overheard Natalie mention that L would be stopping by around noon, and she wasn’t about to face him until she had more answers. This was bigger than she’d imagined, and she wasn’t going to let Ludwik—or L—get away with it.
Her plan was taking shape, but with each passing minute, the tension in her chest grew. What if she was wrong? What if everything she thought was a lie was actually true?
