Chapter_15
Whitney’s senses immediately sharpened. She didn’t need to turn around to know that someone was approaching with purpose. The sharp, deliberate clicks of high heels could only belong to one person—Roselyn.
She didn’t need to waste time pretending to be surprised. Instead, Whitney straightened up in her seat, her expression cold, masking the tension that coiled in her chest. Roselyn’s presence in the hotel at this moment wasn’t a coincidence. Whitney was certain of it.
As Roselyn came into view, she flashed a smile, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “Well, well, look who we have here,” she purred, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Don’t tell me you’re actually working, Whitney? I thought you were too busy with that ‘thug boyfriend’ of yours.”
Whitney remained silent, her gaze unwavering. She didn’t have the energy for Roselyn’s games, not when she was so close to achieving her goal.
Roselyn stood there, hands on her hips, eyes scanning Whitney with that familiar, judgmental sneer. “Tell me, Whitney, do you feel good about yourself, living this life?” she continued, her voice growing sharper. “I mean, you were always so above everyone else back in college, but now look at you. Reduced to manipulating people for a seat at the table. It’s a shame, really.”
Whitney’s jaw tightened, but she refused to let Roselyn get under her skin. She slowly set down her glass, meeting Roselyn’s gaze with calculated calm. “You don’t know anything about my life, Roselyn,” Whitney replied coolly. “So why don’t you take your little game elsewhere?”
Roselyn’s smile faltered, but she quickly regained her composure. “You’re really going to pretend like nothing’s going on, huh?” she said with a chuckle, though it lacked amusement. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Whitney. You think that rich guy you’re hanging around is going to save you? He’s not your knight in shining armor. People like him don’t rescue people like you.”
Whitney could feel the underlying threat in Roselyn’s words, but she didn’t flinch. “You have no idea who I’m working with, Roselyn. And trust me, it’s not a game I’m playing.”
She rose from the lounge chair, her eyes locking onto Roselyn’s with quiet intensity. “But you’re right about one thing,” Whitney continued, her voice low but steady. “I am playing for something bigger than you, bigger than Monica. So why don’t you take your drama and run along? I have bigger things to handle.”
Roselyn’s eyes narrowed, her frustration obvious, but she didn’t push any further. Instead, she tossed a last, venomous glare at Whitney before turning on her heel and walking away, her heels clicking sharply as she disappeared down the hall.
Whitney exhaled slowly, watching her leave. She knew Roselyn and Monica would stop at nothing to drag her down, but Whitney wasn’t going to let them win. She had a plan, and she would see it through, no matter what obstacles they threw her way.
Tiana’s voice crackled through the earpiece again. “Whitney, I’ve got some news. The signal’s back. Let’s move on this while we still have the advantage.”
Whitney nodded, already shifting her focus back to the task at hand. Roselyn’s little threats and petty remarks weren’t enough to throw her off. There was a bigger picture here, and Whitney wasn’t about to let anything—or anyone—get in her way.
