Chapter_151
Whitney’s mind buzzed with a whirlwind of conflicting emotions as she left the room, Ludwik’s warning about Bryce echoing in her mind. “He’s not who he appears to be.” The words sent a chill down her spine, and she fought to push them aside for the moment. There was no time to second-guess her alliances. She had to focus—focus on the mission ahead, on the truth that needed to be exposed before they all drowned in this ever-deepening mess.
The door clicked shut behind her as she walked back down the hallway, the distant sounds of murmurs and rustling papers in the station a reminder of just how much was at stake. Everything she had worked for, everything she had fought against, now hung on the precipice of revelation. If they didn’t stop Ludwik’s uncle, everything could fall apart—not just for her, but for everyone involved.
Bryce, she thought again. She couldn’t afford to let his warnings shake her, but they gnawed at her, sinking their claws deeper. Was he involved in this grand conspiracy? Or was Ludwik’s suspicion simply a result of the paranoia he was no doubt feeling in the wake of everything that had happened?
The problem was, she couldn’t afford to take chances, not anymore. The line between friend and foe was becoming increasingly blurred, and her trust had already been tested to the breaking point. For all she knew, Ludwik might be right. Bryce’s connections to the web of manipulation might be far more extensive than she’d realized, and if she wasn’t careful, she could be walking straight into another trap.
She reached the front desk of the police station and nodded curtly to the officer who had been watching her with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. She wasn’t sure if her interactions here would be counted as a favor or a risk to her reputation, but right now, it didn’t matter. Her mind was already on the next steps. The faster they took down Ludwik’s uncle, the better.
As she stepped outside into the cool night air, her phone buzzed in her hand, pulling her from her thoughts. She glanced at the screen and saw Felix’s name.
“Madam,” Felix’s voice crackled through the receiver, his usual calm demeanor replaced with an edge of urgency, “the situation has escalated. The police have found something. They’re making arrests. We need to act fast.”
Whitney’s pulse quickened. What had they found?
“What do you mean?” she demanded, her voice sharp.
Felix hesitated, and she could hear the sound of papers shuffling in the background. “It’s your uncle, Madam. Keegan’s name is coming up more and more in the investigation. The police are connecting him to the Tarringtons, and it’s only a matter of time before they realize what he’s been orchestrating.”
Whitney’s stomach churned. Keegan. The man who had been behind so many of the manipulations that had ensnared her, the one who had used her as a pawn in his own power games. The truth was finally coming out, but it was a double-edged sword.
“Where are you now?” she asked, the question urgent.
“I’m at the safe house,” Felix replied. “We need to decide what our next move is. If we don’t make a move soon, we risk being caught in the middle of this mess.”
Whitney paused for a moment, the weight of everything crashing down on her. She had two choices: keep her focus on taking down Ludwik’s uncle or try to protect herself—and the few people she could trust—by going underground.
There was no time for hesitation. She needed to act now.
“I’m on my way,” Whitney said firmly, her resolve hardening. “We can’t let Keegan get away with this. He needs to be exposed before it’s too late.”
As she hurried to the car, her mind raced with a plan—if Keegan was truly behind this, then the only way to stop him was to expose every dark connection he had, every piece of evidence that linked him to the corruption. But she couldn’t do it alone. She needed people who were as committed to the truth as she was.
And right now, she wasn’t sure who those people were.
As the car sped toward the safe house, she cast one last glance at the city lights, knowing that the storm was only just beginning.
