Chapter_139
Whitney paused, a flicker of surprise crossing her face. She hadn’t expected L to offer such an invitation, and for a moment, she wondered what his true intentions were. But she quickly pushed the thought aside. This was her family—her uncle, the only person she could rely on. She wasn’t about to let anything or anyone stand in the way of that moment.
“That sounds perfect,” she said, her voice warm, but there was a subtle tension that lingered between them, one that neither of them acknowledged.
L leaned back in his chair, his expression shifting to something more guarded, though it was still far from cold. “I’m glad you’re happy, Whitney. Your family deserves your focus. Just… don’t let this distract you from what we’re building here. We need you, too.”
Whitney nodded, but her mind was already elsewhere. Her uncle was coming back, and that meant so much more than just a family reunion. There were answers waiting for her—answers that would explain the years of silence, the cryptic messages, and the unresolved pain that still hung over her.
She walked out of the office, her mind buzzing with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. As she made her way to her car, she couldn’t help but feel that the pieces of the puzzle were starting to come together. But there were still so many gaps—especially concerning Ludwik, the name that had been circled in red ink in her grandfather’s contact book. What did it all mean?
The next morning, Whitney stood at the airport, her heart pounding with anticipation as she scanned the crowd for her uncle. The years apart had only made her more determined to understand the man he had become. She had no idea what he’d been through, but she knew that now, they would finally be able to confront the past.
A figure emerged from the crowd, tall and with a familiar, yet hardened look. It was him—Uncle Keegan. He looked older, wearier, but his eyes were unmistakable. The same eyes she had seen in her memories of childhood, the same eyes that had always protected her when everything seemed so uncertain.
“Uncle Keegan!” she called out, her voice breaking slightly as she rushed toward him.
He turned, his face lighting up at the sight of her, and they embraced. The years of separation seemed to melt away in that moment, but beneath the joy, Whitney could sense a deeper tension, an unspoken weight.
As they pulled away, her uncle’s expression shifted, a trace of sadness flickering across his features. “Whitney, I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you sooner. So much has happened… but we’re here now. And I promise, we’ll face it all together.”
Whitney nodded, feeling a swell of emotions—relief, sorrow, and a growing sense of determination. She had so many questions, but she knew the answers would come in time.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment, Uncle,” she said quietly, her voice strong despite the turmoil inside. “But there’s something else I need to ask you about… something about the past. Do you know anything about Ludwik?”
Her uncle’s face tightened at the mention of the name, and for a split second, Whitney could see a flicker of something dark in his eyes—something that hinted at a history she wasn’t prepared for. “Ludwik… I see you’ve already stumbled upon that name. We’ll talk about it, Whitney. But not yet. There’s a lot you don’t know.”
The answer only fueled her curiosity further, but she knew pushing too hard would only make things more difficult. She had to let her uncle open up when he was ready.
As they walked toward the car, she glanced back at the airport, where the shadow of the past seemed to loom larger than ever.
