Chapter_265
Whitney frowned as she clambered out of bed, a sense of unease creeping over her. Her mood was sour, the night’s sleep having done little to calm her.
“Mama…” A small, familiar voice tugged at her thoughts. Danny’s little head emerged from under the covers, his eyes rubbing sleepily, yet there was a trace of fear in his gaze. “Who’s at the door?”
His words sent a wave of dread through her. Was it Ludwik? Had he finally found them? Come to take him away?
“Don’t worry, sweetie,” Whitney murmured, instinctively pulling the blanket tighter around him as she stepped away, gently closing the bedroom door behind her.
She approached the front door of her apartment with careful steps, reassured by the presence of security cameras in the hallway. Curiosity, not fear, guided her hand to the doorknob. She cracked the door open slightly, peering out into the night.
“Who’s there at this ungodly hour…?”
The question was cut short by a violent yank that pulled her from the safety of her home.
The man who grabbed her was large and powerful, his anger radiating as he slammed her against the wall. Whitney’s pulse quickened, her thoughts flashing to Danny just inside the door. She feigned composure, narrowing her eyes and snapping, “Mr. Lippert, can’t you take a hint and leave me be?”
Her voice was still husky with sleep, her velvety eyes heavy with the remnants of dreams—an inadvertent allure that only seemed to fuel his frustration.
Ludwik’s gaze dropped, his expression darkening as the scent of her perfume filled the air, mixing with the tension between them. The quiet of the night seemed to magnify the temptation of her presence.
After a moment of distracted frustration, his voice dropped low, full of resentment, “What kind of sorcery have you used on me, you scheming woman?”
Whitney blinked, her mind slow to catch up with his words.
Her half-lidded eyes and the soft flutter of her lashes gave her an air of lazy seduction, though it was unintentional.
Ludwik’s throat worked as he swallowed hard, his anger boiling. “Out with it! What tricks have you pulled? Why is it I can’t feel anything for Elaine or any other woman, but you…?”
Whitney’s lips curved into a faint smirk, the realization dawning on her. He had no spark with Elaine, and now he thought it was her fault? She couldn’t help but snort softly, her gaze still locked with his, “Oh, Mr. Lippert, has your charm worn out? Now you come to me for relief?”
The words struck him dumb, his handsome face darkening further, a look of sheer rage taking over. He looked as though he might strangle her.
His ears reddened slightly as he growled, “Like that little show in the bathroom earlier? What witchcraft was that? I want to see it for myself this time!”
Whitney stiffened, her chest tight as his body pressed against hers. The heat between them was suffocating, but she wasn’t the one to blame. Had he really been holding onto some misguided desire for three years?
She smiled coolly, withdrawing slightly from his grip, “Frankly, Mr. Lippert, your passion disgusts me. Do I really need to resort to tricks? A man who can’t control his desires blames the woman. Are you even a man?”
Ludwik’s fury reached a breaking point. He gripped her waist harder, his eyes stormy with jealousy. “Don’t play coy with me. Would I be like this if you hadn’t flaunted yourself at me?”
His insides burned with jealousy, the thought of how many men she had been with in the past three years searing his thoughts. She was so effortless, so… seductive.
“Do you want to know?” Whitney’s smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. “What business is it of yours?” She took a step back, her eyes narrowing. “You better go home, Mr. Lippert. Keep bothering me, and I’ll make sure Elaine’s heart breaks.”
The mention of Elaine made Ludwik’s anger surge. “The nerve to bring her up! If you hadn’t seduced me, she wouldn’t be heartbroken,” he spat, voice rising with fury. “What have you done to me? Why can’t I resist you? Explain yourself or you won’t have a moment’s peace tonight!”
Whitney rolled her eyes, her voice icy. “Maybe I’m just that charming. After three years, you’re still hung up on me?”
Ludwik’s gaze sharpened as he stared at her face, the accusation hitting its mark. “You heartlessly caused our child’s death. I will never forgive you for that. I want to see you pay.”
Whitney froze, the words sinking into her chest like ice. Danny—he was asleep inside, unaware of the venom spilling from Ludwik’s mouth. This man didn’t deserve to know the truth.
Her heart raced, anxiety flashing across her face, but she quickly lifted her chin, her smile becoming cold as ice. “The feeling’s mutual. I’ll never forgive the man who drove me to jump into the sea.”
Ludwik’s eyes widened in disbelief. “I never forced you to jump,” he snapped, incredulous.
No, not overtly. But he had ignored her plea for help when she was at her lowest. Whitney held back the surge of resentment and forced the words out, “I have no interest in midnight chats, Mr. Lippert. I’m cold, and since you find me so repulsive but can’t control yourself, here’s some advice.”
Her eyes gleamed with mischief, and Ludwik’s anger flared. “What advice?”
“Consider castration. It’ll solve your problem.”
Ludwik’s fury peaked, his hands trembling with rage. He took a sharp breath, but before he could respond, Whitney took her chance. She moved swiftly, slamming the door shut in his face.
“Get out of my way!” he snarled, shoving his leg through the gap.
Without hesitation, Whitney kneed him hard in the stomach.
He groaned, stumbling backward, a twisted grimace on his face as he braced himself against the door. “You viper! Trying to leave me childless?”
Whitney’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “You’re as useless as they come, Mr. Lippert. But I won’t make it easy for you. Not for any man, certainly not for a scoundrel like you.”
Ludwik, unable to respond through the pain, glared at the door one last time before turning away in frustration, heading toward the elevator. As the doors closed, he redialed Felix.
Felix, with bleary eyes, nearly collapsed when he saw his boss. “Mr. Lippert…”
“Revoke Whitney’s medical license immediately. Make sure she can’t work in Banyan City,” Ludwik ordered, his voice tight with fury. “And get in touch with the auction house. Let Elaine take over Skye Gem Ltd. starting tomorrow.”
The rage burning inside him needed to be released, and Whitney had dared to provoke him.
Felix swallowed, speechless. Hadn’t Mr. Lippert been meeting with Ms. Valentine tonight?
Ludwik hissed in pain, settling into his car. He fumbled for something in his pocket before regaining his composure, gritting his teeth.
“Get me a urologist,” he muttered.
Felix was left speechless, trying to make sense of it all.
Meanwhile, Whitney breathed deeply to calm herself. When the elevator doors had closed, she ventured back to her bedroom, but as she lifted the covers, she found no sign of Danny.
“Danny?!” she called, her heart leaping in her chest.
